There’s a dangerous lie that creeps into our hearts sometimes — especially in hard seasons. It whispers, “If you don’t feel strong, your faith must be weak.” “If you’re doubting, God must be disappointed.” “If you’re tired, you must not believe.”

I used to live under that lie. In recovery. In leadership. Even in my marriage. I thought real faith was supposed to feel powerful, confident, and bulletproof all the time. But the truth is… faith isn’t a feeling. It’s a decision.

Feelings Are Fickle

Feelings are real, but they are horrible leaders! One day you feel on fire. Next, you feel numb. One morning, you feel motivated to run your race, and by the afternoon, you wonder if it even matters.

Emotions can help signal what’s happening inside us, but they were never meant to anchor our lives. If you let feelings lead you, your faith will rise and fall like a rollercoaster. One week you’re ready to charge the gates of hell with a water pistol. Next, you’re hiding in shame, wondering if God even notices you anymore.

I don’t believe God designed faith to be based on our emotions. Faith is rooted in His unchanging nature, not our changing emotions.

As Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (NLT)

Our hearts are powerful… but not always truthful. That’s why we need something stronger to build our lives on.

Faith Is Rooted in Trust

Real faith doesn’t ignore feelings. But it doesn’t bow to them either.

Real faith says:

“God, I trust You even when my emotions don’t agree.” “I believe Your promises even when my senses tell me otherwise.” “I will move forward in obedience even when fear screams for me to freeze.”

Faith is not pretending everything is okay. Faith is choosing to believe that God is still good even when nothing looks okay yet.

Paul said it like this in 2 Corinthians 5:7: “For we live by believing and not by seeing.”

In other words — real faith isn’t rooted in visible proof. It’s rooted in trusting the invisible God who has never once failed His people.

Choosing Faith Daily

Faith isn’t a once-and-done decision you made at an altar call years ago. Faith is a daily decision.

Every morning:

  • Before the fear creeps in.
  • Before the doubts roll over you.
  • Before the old voices try to call you back to the life you left behind.

You have a choice: “Today, will I trust what I feel… or will I trust who He is?“

When Feelings Fail You, Remember:

  • Pray anyway. Even when you feel distant. Even when it feels awkward.
  • Stay in the Word. Even when it feels dry. His Word plants seeds deeper than your senses can see.
  • Obey quickly. Even when everything inside you wants to delay or quit.
  • Talk to someone you trust. Don’t walk through doubts alone. Isolation fuels lies (I know this firsthand).

I can tell you from my own recovery journey: The days I didn’t feel like staying sober… The days I didn’t feel like leading well… The days I didn’t feel like showing up… Those were the days faith had to become a decision, not an emotion.

And those were the days that built the foundation under my feet now.

Faithful Even When I’m Not

The beautiful truth about faith is this: Even when my feelings fail… Even when my efforts falter… God remains faithful.

2 Timothy 2:13 says: “If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.”

That’s the God we serve. Not a God who demands we feel perfect before we follow. But a God who calls us to trust, even through trembling hands and tired hearts.

You don’t need to feel strong to have strong faith. You just need to keep choosing Him. Every step of the race. Every lap around the wilderness. Every run into the unknown. Faith isn’t about hyping yourself up. It’s about resting in who He is, not how you feel. Today, don’t chase a feeling. Choose your foundation. Choose Jesus. Because faith that stands the test of time is faith built on a decision, not an emotion.
